Joint meeting in Aalborg
Hans Thor Andersen
November 10, 2023
The joint meeting at Aalborg was scheduled for the 21st to 23rd of August. Several participants already arrived at the beginning of August as part of a secondment. Thus, Aalborg municipality organized a meeting on the 8th of August to give a brief intro to the city and its recent development and the principles of the non-profit housing sector. These topics were presented in detail a week later, as well as the municipal housing strategy and the municipality’s efforts towards a coherent urban development. Two days later, the Aalborg planning section organized an excursion to the harbor front and the inner city.
The 3rd DASH project meeting was held from 21 to 23 August 2023 in Aalborg. The meeting began with lunch at Aalborg municipality followed by two introductory presentations: First presentation gave us an insight on the social housing sector in Denmark, followed by a lecture on the transformation of Aalborg from a manufacturing city to a knowledge-based economy and the present housing policy of Aalborg. The day ended with a walk around central Aalborg and a joint dinner near the harbor front.
On the second day, a bus took the participants to Aalborg East, a social housing estate 5-6 km east of the city center. Mr. Sven Buch from the housing organization presented the “Aalborg model”, which consists of a close cooperation between the housing organization, the municipality and various private stakeholders. Joint efforts over the last 15 years have delivered various improvements, among others a local health center and a cultural center. The efforts are driven by local people to reduce the sense of central orchestration and alienation. After lunch, we took a bus to another estate in the eastern part of Aalborg (Grønlandskvarteret). Gurli Johnsen and Anne Juel Andersen from Aalborg Municipality gave a brief intro to the challenges and efforts, followed by an excursion on foot, which included a visit to a vacant dwelling.
During the second day, the German, Serbian and Portuguese social housing systems were briefly presented. The last day lasted until lunch and included a workshop with a panoramic view on the harbor front. The aim was a discussion of the impressions seen with outsiders’ eyes and reflections on good & bad solutions to some of the challenges. The final part of the meeting was an introduction to work package 3 – the cross country housing report – by Sónia Alves.
On the 25th of August, Mrs. Anne Juel Andersen of Aalborg Municipality, gave an introduction to urban planning in Denmark and gave examples of how this is applied in Aalborg city.
